Alternative & Renewable Fuels Consulting
Jacobs Consultancy’s Petroleum, Chemicals & Energy Practice offers its clients a variety of services related to alternative and renewable energy.
Biofuels and Renewable Energy
Biofuel production begins with any type of biomass, and whether it is wood, wood waste, agricultural waste, grain, algae or municipal solid waste, Jacobs Consultancy is experienced in the properties, the different handling needs, and processing of them all. Because each feedstock has its own handling characteristics, we design the process accordingly.
Our market and client diversity provide needed experience and expertise required for the spectrum of new technologies emerging in biofuel production. We also have the technology background and capital project experience to bring these enterprises into the commercial marketplace. These services include feasibility studies, technology evaluation, front-end engineering design (FEED) packages, detailed designs, estimating, procurement, construction and start-up assistance. Our technical capabilities, which are available to help biofuels clients across the diversity of technologies, include:
- Biomass handling
- Municipal solid waste facilities
- Agricultural waste and cellulose to biofuels
- Dryers and dewatering
- Gasification and syngas clean-up
- Catalytic conversion
- Biomass gasification
- Biofuels production via algae
Wind and Solar
We provide support services — both in terms of executing environmental impact assessments, as well as design and technical performance — to a number of wind farm projects. Our staff is also heavily involved in both the manufacture and deployment of photovoltaic cells. With a center of excellence for the design and construction of polysilicon and photovoltaic cell manufacturing plants, we perform feasibility and market studies for the manufacture of polysilicon for use in solar cells.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Jacobs Consultancy has conducted a number of studies looking at novel technologies for carbon capture and storage (CCS). These have included conceptual design, cost estimation, and overall optimization of the process scheme to improve environmental performance. From work with clients, we have elaborated on the concept of Capture Readiness and determined the practical definition of Capture Ready.
Power Generation (with CCS)
The Petroleum, Chemicals & Energy Practice plays a leading role in providing technical review and conceptual design of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, integrated with high-efficiency power generation. Past projects have included pre-combustion (as part of integrated gasification combined cycle schemes), post-combustion, and oxy-combustion technologies. Our studies have included both new-build power plants equipped with CCS and the potential retrofitting of CCS technology to existing power plants.
